  1. Hi,

    Love the app.
I see a Webcam Viewer.settings file that is created after first startup. If i open it up with notepad i can see some settings. Are there more setting and what are all the setting options.

I’m looking for a way to start the app in Full Full screen mode (with minimal border en no options visable) and have the video feed started automatically (without needing to click on Start)

  2. Hi! absoulutely great app as a alternative to the Windows Camera app, however can you please add support to capture sound as well? I actually use this app to view video through my capture card and play games on it. It has the least lag of any capture app but because there is no sound i can not play games. Thanks!

  4. I tried it and according to some recently viewed literature it requires Win 7. I’m using Vista and the older version worked, 3.5 doesn’t which I suspect you already know. Any chance I can get a copy of the older version?

    TIA
    Alex

    • Your requirements are not possible to fulfill. What you might do is preinstall the camera drivers into your operating system image.

    • I support this suggestion 100%.
This would make it to be the only software (that I know of) which can be used to see yourself the way video conferencing apps would do (like Skype and Zoom). Helpful when you want to record yourself using OBS in the same way as it would appear would you use OBS in the conference.

    • On my system, they end up in a folder in the same directory and the .exe file (which on my system is my desktop).

    • SAME QUESTION??? I can’t find them. How are they named so I can at least search for them. A configuration option of save directory would be nice.

        • Ah – now I see: a folder gets created with the name of the webcam, then the images get stored in there.
Some help from the app would be really useful here (either explain in the about page or have a link to the folder).
Nice handy app by the way 🙂

  5. dear devolper, thanks for this useful app!
I need a very simple webcam viewer and your solution is good for me.
I need just the autostart function if you can spend a bit more time on this app 😉
    thanks in advance

      • Not on my system. The EXE is on my path and so I can execute from anywhere. I executed it from another location from the command line. The captures are neither on that directory or the directory with the EXE or root.

What would be the filename – so I can search for it.

        Thanks

  6. I am trying to install the new version. I presently have Ver1. but it seems I can not do that unless I delete the old version. How do i do that?

  7. Can you allow the screen to be narrower than 400 px in Windows 10?

I had version 1 in windows 7 and it let me get the screen very narrow, but 10 is like 400px.

I only use 70px of the image from the camera so I could save a ton of screen space.

  8. Seems to be a memory leak in v3.5 on Windows 10 when running for longer periods of time. Is this a known issue? What do you need to fix that?

  9. Just curious how you are connecting to the webcam? Trying to figure out coding for an application to use similar protocols

  10. Thanks so much for this app! This kind of thing should be built into Windows. Works great with W10, as does V1.0.

  11. Hi,

I use Webcam viewer 1.0 and there is only 1 minor problem. Every time I open it I must set the resolution to 640×480.. Is there a way to make that the default?

    thanks,
    Aaron

  12. Using a PTZ camera and video works great in HD.
If I could just control the PTZ with this app.
Is there an update you are planning on controlling PTZ?

  14. Very useful little app, especially in these days of remote teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    I only have three suggestions:

    1. Some way to specify/change the light grey colour used to fill the window/titlebar when operating WebCamViewer in its ‘minimal’ mode. Being able to set it to another colour would allow it blend better with things like Teams and Zoom. (NB I also agree with the comment above about an even more minimal frame mode)

    2. Allow it to remember what resolution was last used with a particular webcam, and to then load that resolution automatically as the default when that camera is next chosen.

    3. At the moment, if you choose a camera, the default resolution is always blank initially. If you click on Start *without* having chosen a resolution, WebCamViewer then closes/crashes. Point 2 above would help this, but it would also be better if it didn’t simply crash?

  15. Dear Bust A Tech,

My name is Michelle Hahn and I am a Tax Consultant I in the export controls practice at Deloitte. We are conducting an internal risk assessment of our client’s third party software, which includes Webcamviewer. We would like to know if you have assigned an export control classification to Webcamviewer. If so, can you please share the ECCN with us. Export control classification numbers (sometimes called ECCNs) are specific alpha numeric codes that indicate whether the product or software needs an authorization to be exported. Some examples of export classification numbers for software could be 5A002, 5D002, or 5A992. If not, can you please answer the following questions related to the application and its capabilities:

1 What is the commercial purpose of the application?
2 Is one of the primary functions of the application communications/networking e.g. chatting or instant messaging using text, images and video?
3 Has the software been designed for use with any machinery? i.e. Operation of a device such as exploration equipment? If yes, please provide details
4 How can the software be purchased e.g. through a website or as part of a service provision?
5 Which devices is the software typically downloaded to? i.e. phone, tablet, asset shared computer?
6 Does the software (including any of the sub applications) contain, use or call encryption (information security) functionality? Please in your answer provide details of the sub applications with such functionality.
7 How does the software utilize cryptography? (commercially, what is it used for – i.e.. sending and receiving information, etc.)
8 Is the encryption functionality of the software limited to performing any of the following:
    1.a “Authentication”
    1.b “Digital Signature”
    1.c “Data integrity”
    1.d “Non-repudiation”
1.e Digital rights management including the execution of copy-protected software 1.f Encryption or decryption in support of entertainment, mass commercial broadcasts or medical records management; or,
1.g Key management in support of any function described above
9 Can users access or change cryptographic functionality in the software?
10 Is the software designed or modified to perform cryptanalytic functions?

    Thank you.

  17. Thanks for this app. Replacing the default windows camera app that has issues and is so hard to re-install.
It recognises my usb webcams (logitech pro9000) and the inbuilt Toshiba laptop one. Captured pictures go to my default /user/andy/pictures folder with the name webcam_viewer-nnnnn-nnnn.jpg where nnn seems to be a sequential numbering. Plus it opens up a new instance of FileExplorer each time.
Hope this answers some of the questions that have been asked earlier and thanks for providing this app.

  18. Thank you for doing them all in sync, really helps those, like myself, to get a grasp as to what they think is best for them (others just want to discuss it and not show the quality itself). The tests were a nice addition and, though I wont use them for mics, thank you for putting that in too.

  20. Thank you for this excellent program. I’ve used version 1.0 for a long time, to display Video capture input from several other computers (using USB HDMI Video Capture devices) and it’s by far the simplest and easiest program to use for that task.
I’ve been so satisfied with version 1.0, that I only just discovered that you have released version 3.5… Wow… 5 years too late to the party. 🙂

The only improvement I can think of is an option to display the image in a border-less window, while options could be available in a drop-down menu when right-clicking anywhere on the image, and left click’n’drag should allow the window to be dragged. That would be awesome.

But thanks a lot for this simple and wonderful program!

  21. Hi, awesome work you are doing. It would be even more awesome if you could add the possibility to rotate the view 90 degrees and/or apply a symmetry without changing the aspect ratio of the image, maybe even add options to modify the aspect ratio if someone ever needs such option 😉 I’d be fine with rotating 90 degrees and symmetry. Anyway i hope you can do this, your webcam viwer would be a graal at this point. Have a nice day !

    Even on Windows 11.

  24. Well, the version 3.5 doesn’t even start on my PC (Windows 10 21H1 64-bit).
The previous version (2.2) was also throwing exceptions complaining about PC name (I guess, because of a dash in it, like “PC-NAME”), and refused to work.

  25. Cool lightweight app.
But 2 simple and essential features would make it top-10 cam app in the world:
    1) access to the standard Windows DirectShow camera config (ffmpeg.exe -f dshow -show_video_device_dialog true -i video=”CamName)
2)Starting up with the last camera immediately connected.
