Free Upgrade to Windows 10, Still

I recently purchased a second hand PC, that it came with Windows 7 preinstalled. I have already upgrade the OS in my laptop from Windows 8 to Windows 10 and I am quite used to Windows 10 features, especially the mouse scroll feature that doesn’t require the windows to be on focus. This feature is not available in Windows 7 which really bother me dealing with multi windows.

Microsoft did offer Windows 10 free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 user but I missed that window that ended on 29th July 2016. Searching for alternative way for Windows 10 free upgrade, it brought me to a few page saying that the free upgrade is still possible now (end Dec 2016) by accessing this page (link)

I tried to click on the “UPGRADE NOW” button and it started a file download to my PC. The filename is “Windows10Upgrade24070.exe”. After executing that file, to my surprise, it seems like the upgrade is running.

It took a while for the download, which for my case ended in an error, 0x80070005. I tried to google around and some suggestion is to turn on antivirus program. I did follow that, turn off Avira Free antivirus, and repeat the process. The bad thing is that I have to go through the download process again.  It tooks another around 1 hour, which also ended with the same error code 0x80070005. This time, I fully uninstall Avira Free antivirus, did a reboot and repeat the process, which successfully complete. I didn’t follow through the download and installation process this time, and leave my PC running until the next morning.

On the next morning, the PC is showing the welcome screen in Windows 10 theme, which means that the process should be complete successfully. I did some normal initial configuration and yes, I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Update 2021-01-12

It is recently tested that the method shown above no longer works for the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I think the only way now is to purchase a new license for Windows 10. Please share in the comment section if you have any other method that still allows the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
